Waves from the back of the universe

I know I know… I said I’d post on Saturday…

but, I was in the midst of midterm hell… grading 90+ exams and 270+ essays… of which I finished SAunday around 5pm… in time to learn that my good friend’s mom had succumbed to brain cancer.

And, to be honest, I *think* about posting… I have the desire to post… but was honestly exhausted and using whatever strength I had left to finish the last few exams. Phew. Anyway, it’s been a busier semester than last spring… and I’m still not in sync with this semester.

I will comment on the president’s use of “pandemic.”

I do not want to hear him refer to the H1N1 as “pandemic” again.  It pisses me off.

Why?  Well, because it’s not pandemic, it’s more of an “epidemic” and if he thinks 1,000 people succumbing to it is a lot… think about the Black Plague… which claimed over 1/3 of the population of Europe, or AIDs/HIV, Cholera, of the Influenza epidemic from 1918.

All of these were far more nationally and globally devastating than H1N1.

Before you get your panties in a twist, think about this: someone said to me yesterday, he said “pandemic” because he’s pushing his healthcare agenda.

Hmm… makes sense.

But, doesn’t EVER president have an agenda?  I think it’s a required trait.

… I have to get to class.  I’ll post more when I can.

  1. Seems to me I heard “pandemic” from the CDC before the President ever said it. And I wondered about that, because it just isn’t the definition I learned. On the other hand, the definition may have changed, because I learned the word at a time when people weren’t hopping onto planes and flying all over the globe on a whim.

The pandemic I learned about was the post WWI flu, which, according to my professor, “decimated” the world’s mail population. I’ve got no stats, just the memory of his saying that. He was a pretty smart guy, though.

My mind’s eye is still playing tricks on me, though. I see H1N1, and I think, you don’t inoculate in the arm for *that*.

  2. Our culture has become so media brainwashed that every time we hear that one person died…it’s a crisis of massive proportions. Don’t get me wrong…, of course, losing a loved one is terrible but so is scaring nations of people to go hide in a dark cave and never relate to another human in real life again.
During my short visit to San Diego, I was on 4 planes and in 4 airports and among large quantities of people. I didn’t see anyone coughing uncontrollable, sneezing or looking like they felt miserable….There were some miserable people but not from illness…if you know what I mean.
    Good luck with the classes…

  3. Yes, the CDC did call it pandemic. I’ll argue it to the grave that the H1N1, as of now, is NOT pandemic.
    I don’t trust the media… especially alarmists.
I don’t believe politicans as they always seem to conveniently lie.
Although I was GLAD that Obama beat out Hillary for the primaries, I was looking to the “lesser of the evils.” Now I’m wondering if perhaps Hillary would’ve been lesser….
